Materials science and the future of publishing
About
Hi there,
My name is Dave Flanagan, aka materialsdave.
Thanks for taking a look at my site. If you’re interested in materials science, or in scientific communication online (or both!), then I hope you’ll find something interesting here.
Just a bit of background info:
I did my PhD with Dave Tirrell, on polythiophenes and artificial peptides. I began at the Polymer Science and Engineering department at UMass Amherst, and then moved with Dave’s group across the country to Caltech.
In 2004, I answered a help wanted ad in Angewandte Chemie, flew out for an interview, and started at Advanced Materials a couple of months later. Advanced Materials is published in Weinheim (“a pleasant small town near Heidelberg in southwest Germany”, according to the brochure), and I haven’t regretted moving to Germany yet.
Since then, I’ve assumed responsibility for Advanced Functional Materials as Editor-in-Chief. I’ve also gotten involved in a few other projects as well, like our materials science news website MaterialsViews.com (check it out) and our polymer science journal JPS: Polymer Physics.
You can follow me on the Twitter at @materialsdave, and on the LinkedIn too. (Actually, you can look for me most places as “materialsdave”.) And, of course, drop me an email, or comment, or DM, if you think I can help with something, if you have something interesting to share, or a suggestion for a post.
Best,
Dave
